because i have to wear socks. and real shoes - not flip-flops.

got Jesus?
coming home from the airport the other day, a seemingly homeless man was sitting at the end of the off-ramp of the interstate. when i started going up the off-ramp i thought, oh man, here's another homeless person who i'll have to try not to make eye contact with because it'll be uncomfortable. when i got close enough i read his sign. it didn't say "will work for food" or "going to nashville?". it said "got Jesus?". yep. one word = conviction.
i felt (feel) conflicted.
i've always heard that you shouldn't give money to homeless people on the street because they're probably going to buy drugs or alcohol. instead of giving money, just go buy them some food and bring back to them or better yet, take them to eat.
when i was in new york, jenn asked me what i thought about homeless people. the question was kind of out of the blue and caught me off guard, so i just answered "i'm fer em". but she raised a point that has had me thinking ever since. God's command wasn't for us to give and then control what the receivers of our gift do with our gift. His command was (is) just to give. what's done with the gift after we give isn't really of consequence to us. our command is to give, not control.
i made eye contact with the "got Jesus?" guy and kept driving. driving in my truck, going to my house, to eat my food, then sleep in my bed.
"...whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me - you failed to do it to me."

heritage
we found a letter in the closet today from my great-grandmother to my mother. the postmark date is november 6, 1972.
dearest linda:
was so glad to have you all home again. we went to church tonight and the meeting was good from start to finish. tony never did get to preach.
marvin was from i guess 25-30 minutes getting the prayer requests. we had the spirit in the singing and while he was taking the prayer request 2 or 3 were prayed for.
then the power really fell. then finally we got all the requests for prayer and we never did settle down to pray on our knees i don't believe.
after a while pat jumped up and said, i believe we can have a victory march and around we went and the power really fell.
and when we got settled down, tony said, i don't believe i can preach. i believe i'll call pauline, lois, jerry and bebe up here and pray for them.
jerry stuck up both hands and the power was on him and pauline spoke in tongues and jerry began to watch her. then we prayed for mae collins and she really took her a spell.
well i can still feel the power and i've been home over an hour.
well hope you can understand what i've tried to say.
i love you. do be careful.
mamaw.

i'm back
so i'm back from california and arizona. for some reason my computer wouldn't connect to the internet out there, so i was out of luck. los angeles was uneventful. by the time i got my rental car and sat in traffic, it was after dark. the next morning i sat in traffic for a another few hours on my way to the meeting. not fun. i took an early flight out to phoenix that day, so i got to see nothing except the 405 while i was in california. no hollywood sign. no hollywood. no beverly hills. no santa monica pier. nada. zilcho.
oh well. maybe next time...
although i did get to see a jackrabbit while i was in the desert in arizona. word.

west coast bound
so i'm off to california tomorrow morning. yeah! i've only been to LAX before and didn't get to venture out of the airport, so i'm pretty pumped.
let me just give you one word of advice though if you're ever booking your own reservations. double check the name of the city in which you're going to be staying. seriously. i thought my meeting was in glendale and booked my hotel near glendale, but oh was i wrong. my meeting is in a town that starts with a "G", but just different letters after the "G". yeah. i'm smart. lucky for me, it's only about 40 minutes south.
from california i go back to arizona before coming back to kentucky. i'll have one evening free while i'm in arizona, so i'm going to read the sign before i go hiking again. ;)
oh dear...

te amo mi tierra
i got to eat last night at my favorite mexican restaurant in the world.
this is smack-yo-grandmamma-upside-the-head good food. for real. plus the atmosphere is unbelievable. a mariachi band strolling around playing and singing. red, white and green lights strung from the ceiling. a grande bakery at the front with vanilla creme campechanas. yum!

1 year anniversary
so about a year ago i started this blog. below are my favorite five posts over the past year in no particular order.
my phone beeped at 5:03am. what's the first thing that ran through my head? something is wrong. very wrong.
it was a voicemail from my sister saying that they had to call 911 for my mother. she was having chest pains and had collapsed and was convulsing on the floor. i got cleaned up and high-tailed it back to la guardia to get an earlier flight back home. there's nothing like flying through flushing, queens during rush hour let me just tell you.
long story short: she did not have a heart attack. there is no damage. yeah.
